Why the DNC is Hiding its 2024 Election Autopsy: An Analysis.

The move by the Democratic National Committee to block the public viewing of its internal autopsy report on the 2024 election is stunning yet entirely predictable. Opposed to unpleasant candor, the party's leadership apparatus behaves closer to a publicity machine than a political organization committed to cultivating a volunteer base for winning elections.

A Climate of Conformity

Reluctant to break with the party establishment's culture demanding unity, the DNC has stayed within the Biden-Harris shadow all through this past year. Making public such a report might have shown whether party leaders truly desire to promote honest conversation regarding the errors that enabled Donald Trump to become president again. Instead, the leadership is moving forward as if there's nothing to understand from the stunning loss of 2024.

"Here’s our North Star: will this lead to victory? If not, it becomes a sideline issue from the core mission," a justification reportedly given to justify concealing the report.

Major Failures an Analysis Could Have Examined

An autopsy report with any value would confront certain uncomfortable matters. This encompasses:

  • Voter Disenchantment: The loss of millions of voters who voted for the Democratic ticket in 2020 was decisive during the tight 2024 election.
  • A Insistence to Run: The determined choice of a party leader to stay in the race, coupled with a very late step-aside, has been criticized as denying the party's base of a competitive nomination process.
  • Losing Touch With Core Democratic Voters: Amid inflation, the electoral effort is criticized for ceding to powerful financial backers while failing to confront the effects of big business.
  • The Gaza Factor: The refusal to shift a stance regarding a ongoing war is cited as driving away significant blocs, especially with young people, Arab-Americans, Muslim voters.
  • A Decline in Young Voter Allegiance: Polling data indicates a major drop-off in Democratic support from voters aged 18-29.

A Pattern of Evasion

Choosing secrecy is consistent with a longstanding habit of sidestepping hard truths. This mirrors a situation in which nearly all Democratic officeholder in Washington supported a sitting president's insistence on running for re-election until a catastrophic campaign event led to a change.

Meanwhile, a significant majority of the electorate had been repeatedly informing researchers that they did not want the incumbent to seek re-election.

Financial Questions

A thorough report could investigate issues regarding where money went, including how much money went to high-priced advisors as well as media firms during an electoral effort that managed to spend a staggering sum in a short period.

The Underlying Implication

Fundamentally, the suppression of the official autopsy points to a deference toward the existing power structure responsible for a losing presidential campaign. The implication to rank-and-file members – including millions of small donors – is that they cannot have a right to know the lessons party chiefs say they discovered based on a report based on conversations with insiders.

A party unwilling to honestly assess where it went wrong will struggle to climb out of the cycle that proved so advantageous to the winning candidate.
