The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The anticipation around the recent awards show was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team might be building a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
