The much-anticipated second season of the musical adult cartoon Hazbin Hotel arrives on the streaming platform this week, and audience theories has been rampant.
Season 1 introduces a large cast of characters residing in Hell and Heaven, pits them against each other accompanied by songs detailing their conflicts, and establishes tense rivalries and angsty, affectionate connections that drive fan obsession.
The fandom's stated hopes for season 2 differ greatly, but certain themes recur frequently: Could a fan-favorite character break free from Valentino? Will we find out more about the mysterious "deal" constraining the enigmatic Alastor? Will [favorite character] and [other character] finally get together?
"Obviously, I don't produce the show with fan service as the main goal," the showrunner stated earlier this year. "However I believe that me being a devotee of the series implies there's a lot of it just naturally. I also am eager for these things, and I hope some of these things to occur, and obviously some of these things are meant to happen in the show!"
She says her long-term vision is for five seasons of Hazbin Hotel. Seasons 3 and 4 have received approval by Prime Video and A24, which produce the series.
That might mean viewers have to wait years for some of the major resolutions — but they could be shocked at how quickly the new season progresses, and how many of what they're anticipating happens now.
"I believe people are going to be highly satisfied," she adds. "We get some firsts. I think we get some really amazing disclosures, some fascinating backstories, and even basic elements, [like] I hope this character gets a song. […] We're going to hear much more singing from the characters we didn't get to hear before."
The creator is well-informed of the guesses and hopes about the upcoming season — particularly in the format of audience prediction charts.
"I've come across a few fans create a prediction grid about the new season," she mentions. "Obviously I can't post it, but I've actually done some of them, and nearly every one of them have almost a bingo. I thought, Oh, if you put this [event] in this spot, it would be a bingo. So that leads me to believe we do a lot [of what fans are waiting for in this season], because I was like, Oh, there's multiple potential bingos on this card. So that makes me happy."
Hazbin Hotel the second season launches on the streaming service on Oct. 29.
