Defense Department Report Finds Hegseth Placed Military Personnel in Danger with Messaging App Chat.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has determined that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by disclosing classified intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Event

The chat group in question included particulars about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen against Houthi militants. This discussion came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other officials in the chat reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not authorized for handling sensitive material.

Potential Risk to Forces

The internal investigation found that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the safety of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

However, the report also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the information he distributed, though it was unclear whether he formally did so.

Hegseth's Reaction

The source said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed information that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the operation. He further stated that he possessed the authority to declassify material and considered the investigation to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been shared with lawmakers. An unclassified version is expected to be made public in the coming days.
