Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
