Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Officers state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered many other vandalized automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report initial examinations suggest the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; authorities are presently not cognizant of any injuries in association with the incident," they added.
Local authorities announced they were trying "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the public for details.
An important political figure commented the incident left him speechless and required to be addressed quickly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the death of nine people by a gunman targeting people of migrant background in 2020.
